email from Dave Beckett he has found the18 SQN LARC

Hi John
Thanks for your reply yes I will try and get info on the Larc I Think it was army owned. In this month issue of the Classic Military Vehicles the centre page is taken put by British Military Hovercraft one excellent photo is taken at Browndown beach a very stony one the Hovercraft was on trials at the time and AER DUKW Coy were involved taken high ranking officers out to sea to watch its performances also in attendance were two Larcs showing off they were fast in the water than the Dukws but when they hit the beach they bounced up high near throwing all the passages off and got stuck digging its self in the stones like some mad animal
one of our Dukw had to winch it out.
We had over 30 Dukw on that excise and stayed at the Royal Navy Bks in Gosport for three week it was great drive them through the centre of the town, we were stationed at Bedford and drove them down to Gosport. Our training used large gravel pits around Bedfordshire and the river, what a  great experience
Will try and get some photo's together, I understand some years ago a guy name Swede was going to write a book about his time in 18 coy didn't it ever get publish?
Cheers for now
David
Ps is there any members in Cheshire?

Jack Mckee is trying to track down Brian Clayton we know he was from the London area any info will be greatly appreciated.

Found via website Dave Beckett Ex RASC Boy Soldier

Just recieved  couple of Photos via Ozzy

This one is of 18 SQN football team in the late sixties

I can only name 3 of them and Ozzy has named some of them who are the rest

Hi John, Sam Dearnley(Ex/Boy and 18 coy RASC) still lives in Fremington, just passed on these two photos, the football team one loaned by Denis Hart, for me to scan and and ask to have them posted on the site, the one of Sam and Tom on the LCT, speaks for itself, trying to name all the team is a different matter, but here goes, my version

Back row L/to/R Ray Hutchings / Dick Desnan,REME / Ken Stafford(red suit) / Alf Dudley,REME / Denis Hart / Capt I. Bamber / Taff Greaves / Tony Hoyland / Derek Mould,REME / Kenny Anderson
Front row L/to/R Phil ?(red suit) / Vic Stables / Taff Blanche / Ozzy Morgan / Cheeky Mcdonagh,REME / Mick Callaghan / Gordon(Flash)Harris
most of these were named by Denis, I,m just confirming the ones I,m certain off, if anyone knows the missing name it would be helpful, I,m not convinced it,s Ken Stafford, but bow to superior knowledge, also Denis suggests it is approx 1969, however I know Kenny Anderson had left the Service long before then! Whatever its great to still have the photos
best wishes to you and yours, Ossy (Osborne)

Just found via the website

Malcolm (Eddy) Edwards and Terry (Taff) Peters also Pete Reeder has gone on line i shal add there details to the data base soon.

I have just recieved some excelent photos from Terry (Taff) Peters well done Taff below is a photo of the Memorial to Norman Holmes in the National Arboretum

Norman Holmes who drowned at Flushing in Holland on exercise in 1964 or 5 he was carrying tank tracks when his DUKW overturned and sank he was wearing a Naval type life belt that was not inflated and the tank tracks took him down, Pete Panks Normans No 2 was wearing a Kapok life jacket and did not even get his Beret wet Norman is sadly missed by all of us.

Hi Geordie,
further to Taff Peters excellent photos, and references to our
past comrade "Norman holmes"  when I visited The National Arboretum in
July, I took photos of  the inscription for "Bobby Laws" & "Joe
Fleming" please see attachments, I have since found out it is possible
to download Adobe PDF files from The Roll of Honour as Attachments, for
any of our past comrades that are included, once again I include the
ones I have as as attachments should you wish to use them, as examples!
Hope you are well, was great to see the correct names on "Officers
Mess" 1971 photo, even I got the OC wrong, and didn,t recognise Hugh,(
but I knew Him) at Fremington, even if he cant remember me? I think
most of us have put on a bit of "Podge" around the middle, funny though
once you know the names how you can recall, whatever they were great I
left the forces in 1969, Only Yesterday! Wishing you all the best and
once again thanks for the site,
     Regards Ossy.

I have just recieved this photograph of the LARC 5 taken in 1960 from a unknown sourse, could the owner please let me know his address so that i can return the origonal cheers Geordie

Mystery solved it was Dave Pedder AKA crispybacon who supplied the LARC photo.

As far as i know only two LARK 5s were on trials in the 1960s 18 Coy had one and the Royal Navy had the other (where are they now) . I know that one of them was purchased from a oil company in Scotland about 15 years ago and was to be restored .

In Feb '46 I was posted to 18 Company RASC in Alexandria and then on detachment to Mena, by the Pyramids near Cairo.  A month or so later the unit disbanded and I was posted on to GHQ Cairo. (another story).
For something to do, I have tried to compile a brief history of 18 Company and thought some of your members may find it of interest.
With best wishes to you and your members,

Hello All

It is with sadness that I have to report the loss of one of our follow friends.  Barry Markley.  Barry had suffered for several month with the big "C".  He did speak with me when he knew there was a reunion planned.  He had booked Jan and himself in for the three days.   He was looking forward in seeing so many of us who served with him during his time in Fremington Camp.

His funeral arrangements will be held at   Poole on 19th September at 1430hrs.  Jan has requested no flowers please.  The home address is listed on page 2 of your Staff List.

For John Routledge:  With Jan Markley  premission please publish on the DUKW site

Yours Aye

Mike (Taff) Ross

A number of ex 18 (AMPH) Coy/Sqn said a sad farewell to Barry yesterday. He was cremated at the Poole Crematorium at 1430hrs 19th September. It was nice to seethe following: Ray & Silivia Hutchings, Don & Babs Turner, Peter (Ozzy) Osborne, Bill Pryor and Mike (Taff) Ross. Jan Markley and her family kept strong throughout the service and one could see there was military discipline, being proud of Barry's achievements throughout his life. What wonderful open personalties they all had. There was a very nice welcome and thanks from the family to the above named. He will be sadley missed by all.
